New models, new frontiers.
7.00pm Thursday 16th July
Lecture Room 1 [LT1], Victoria School of Architecture, Vivian Street, Te Aro

The Architectural Centre (proudly sponsored by the Wellington Company) invite you to come and listen to insights and reflections from Tamara Veltre and Jeremy McLeod – the originators of the very successful Nightingale Housing Projects in Australia – championing people over profit through their numerous co-housing, with potential applications to Whanganui A Tara.
BREATHE Architects from Melbourne originated what they’ve termed “The Nightingale Project” in 2014.
They applied all their considerable design abilities into creating a new, well designed high-density living environments. Aimed at a mixed demographic of age and living unit size, participants have been willing to share some communal facilities (laundries, rooftop gardens and their produce, etc) by offering a range of single to 3-bedroom units. Dwellings are mixed with shared recreational spaces and, while private car parking isn’t included, some shared car use is provided along with significant cycle storage. Developments are in locations close to public transport connections.
Attention to low-cost unit entry and sustainable design mean entering (buying-in) and costs-in-use – especially for energy consumption – are kept to a minimum.
Occupancy and interest in the Nightingale approach has been very strong. The model has transitioned into a sophisticated non-profit format and Nightingale projects are now located within most of Australia’s larger cities.
The Architectural Centre, with the proud sponsorship of the Wellington Company, has invited Tamara Veltre and Jeremy McLeod – the Principals of BREATHE Architecture and the originators of the Nightingale Project to come and speak to us about this exciting Co-housing type and what it offers as a model to reduce entry and living costs and prioritise community.
This free public lecture will be proceeded by the Architectural Centre’s AGM, from 6pm.
Event will be eligible for CPD points.
