City to Sea Bridge

In 2024 the Wellington City Council announced the City to Sea Bridge, designed by John Gray and Rewi Thompson in the 1990s, would be demolished due to earthquake risk. In January 2025 an exhibition, ‘Performing the Archive,’ digitised John Gray’s collection of drawings from this project.

This exhibition demonstrated how raising archives of architectural practice into the public domain can stimulate discussion about the our built environment.

We are please to be able to say, as of December 2025, the demolition decision has been revoked.

As a consequence of this event, drawings of the Bridge were able to be included in Rendered Futures: Drawing architecture (28 Jun–24 Aug 2025) at Object Space Gallery.
